Why do USB Drives or Pen Drives Malfunction and fail
USB drives and Pen Drives are a very convenient method to save data but may fail disastrously without warning resulting in the data being lost or unavailable. This article outlines some of the potential causes of failure and briefly describes how to correct the problems.
Software corruption of the data can lead to an individual file or folder being unreadable or corrupted to the whole pen drive being unreadable. Software faults may be caused by any of the following:-
1: The pen drive may have been removed during a software write. This may cause a single file or folder to be corrupted and can usually be easily corrected by using chkdsk or a program designed to repair software corruption.
2: A virus may have been introduced onto the pen drive or may be active on the computer that has been accessing the RAM disk. It may be possible to recover the data using a virus detector.
3: Sometimes the computer USB driver may become corrupted resulting in either no response when the pen drive is connected or sometimes a cryptic message indicating that the hardware is faulty. Try connecting your pen drive to another computer, if this solves the problem then the fault definitely lies with the first computer and not the drive.
Hardware faults are far more serious in pen drives and can be caused by the following:-
1: The pen drive has been bent whilst connected to the USB port. This may result in the USB plug completely snapping from the drive or may break or fracture the solder joints from the USB plug to the PCB of the drive. In the later case the pen drive will probably not be seen by the PC or possibly a USB error message will be generated. It is very unlikely that you could repair this fault yourself; you will need to seek help from a pen drive repair specialist.
2: Very much like the last fault except the drive has not been knowingly subject to being bent. Sometimes, due to the normal stresses of insertion and removal to the USB on the computer port, one or more internal connections may make partial contact. You may find that the drive works intermittently when it is moved slightly in the socket. If this occurs then you may just be able to save the data before it stops working again.
3: The electronics sometime fail inside the pen drive. This may be caused by a faulty USB port on the computer or failure of the drive itself. Static discharge can easily damage the electronics especially if you walk on a nylon carpet then insert the drive without first touching the computer metal. If the electronics fail, it may be possible for a pen drive specialist to recover your data, however, if the internal RAM chip has failed then would not usually be possible.
4: If the pen drive has been dropped in water then DO NOT plug it into the USB port! As soon as it is plugged into a computer electrolysis will occur between the damp electronic tracks and recover of the data will be impossible. The drive should be immediately opened up and fully dried. Great care must be taken when opening it so as not to damage the delicate PCB or connector. It must be fully dried before it is connected to the computer, possibly on a warm radiator etc overnight. It should now function correctly, but the data should be backed up and the drive discarded.
5: Occasionally, pen drives will work when first connected to the computer then display an error message after several minutes or hours. If this occurs then it is likely that it is failing when it warms up. You should immediately backup the data.
Pen drives, RAM sticks, RAM drives etc are reliable if used with care, however, when failure occurs it is usually without warning. If your important data is only on the pen drive then it may easily be lost forever. It would be prudent to save important data to DVDs etc as a more reliable long term data storage solution.
If ever a pen drive appears to be malfunctioning immediately backup the data and replace it.
